How this scam typically works

  1. A new number messages you claiming to be a relative, friend, officer or business owner.
  2. They use a copied profile picture or a similar name to look convincing.
  3. They create an emergency: "I am in trouble, send money fast".
  4. They avoid voice or video calls, or use a fake excuse to stay on text.

Red flags

  • A new number claiming to be someone you already know.
  • Urgent money request and secrecy.
  • Refusal of voice/video call verification.
  • Requests for OTP, bank details or card information.
  • Slightly different spellings or profile details.

  • Call the real person on the number you already have saved.
  • Never send money based only on chat messages.
  • Ask a question only the real person could answer.
  • Report and block the impersonating profile or number.
